In 1992 I begun a series of photographs documenting carnivorous plants, two of which held a particular fascination for me; the Venus Fly trap and the Pitcher Plant. These are very rare lith prints made on Kentmere Art Classic silver gelatin fibre Baryt paper, one long since discounted . These were handprinted by me in my London darkroom and only one of each is available for sale.

In April 2010 Snap Galleries relocated from Birmingham to a beautiful premises over three floors in the heart of Piccadilly in central London. Coinciding with the move to London, a very exciting new product range of miniaturised 3D artworks called Tablet Editions. Tablets are a completely new kind of exclusive, limited edition, freestanding collectible. Each one is a miniaturized three dimensional artwork, small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. Tablets do not require framing and so are ready to display straight out of the box. They sit perfectly on desks, bookcases, shelves, and cabinets; in fact, they look good anywhere. Tablets make ideal gifts and souvenirs. Tablets feature iconic images from the world of photography, art and design. The founding philosophy behind Tablet Editions is that each and every Tablet must represent the very best work from any given artist’s archives. Over time, the body of work released in Tablet format will grow into a substantial series of carefully curated limited edition collectibles, enabling you to build a beautiful art collection without major constraints on your wallspace or your back pocket. The inaugural releases from Tablet Editions feature four important photographs from the archives of British photographer Simon Larbalestier, the man who made the photographs that appeared on the sleeves of all the albums released by cult US band the Pixies in the late eighties/early nineties. Produced in finite and exclusive worldwide limited editions, Simon Larbalestier’s Tablets are supplied with a hand-signed, individually numbered certificate of authenticity, which opens out to reveal Simon Larbalestier’s detailed personal recollections of the story behind each classic image, and features rare session image(s) to accompany Simon’s text. To see the current range of Tablets please go here. To contact the director of Snap Galleries; Guy White, please email to info@snapgalleries.com or call +44 (0)20 7493 1152.

“Torso” (“1992″) is a photograph that appeared in 4AD/v23 Anatomy Calendar (1993), designed by Vaughan Oliver and Chris Big of v23. What few people may know is that “Torso” has an earlier history.
“……..in the v23 studio we had fallen in love with the dark, lonely, angst-ridden quality of the record. We spoke with Ivo about sending some alternative ideas. A cow’s hoof (AKA “Torso” ) was an early favourite, but it proved too strong for the singer Mark Kozelek, though it opened his eyes to the surface quality and mood a photograph can project. The bed , an existing image in Simon’s portfolio was the next obvious choice.”
Chris Bigg, “Vaughan Oliver Visceral Pleasures”, Rick Poynor, Booth-Clibborn Editions, London, 2000.

Between Two Worlds is a long term project that began in 2001 and explores the relationship between human faith and reverence in South East Asia’s Buddhist culture, temple architecture and places of worship. The locations are Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam and also includes the gompa temples of Ladakh, Northern India. The images were made with Leica M, Fuji GS 690 III, Mamiya’s 6 & 7, Plaubel Makina 670 and Hasselblad Xpan cameras. Several prints are available for purchase. The Between Two Worlds series (1999) are all artist’s proofs made on a paper now discontinued; Kentmere’s Kentona (glossy) silver gelatin Baryt paper, or the Indian Baryt paper; Sterling Premium F (grade 3). The Limited Edition set is in the pipeline and this will be on the Czech Republic Baryt paper Foma though the colours will differ to these you see now as the paper responds quite differently in dilute lith developer. The price rises as the edition numbers rise.

In late June 2008, whilst I was in Bangkok, Vaughan Oliver sent me an email inviting me to join him on a new Pixies’ project which was later given the title Minotaur. The client this time was not the record label 4Ad or the Pixies themselves but Jeff Anderson from Artist in Residence. Read the press release for Minotaur here. Purchase the Minotaur Box Set from here. View my unedited version of the project on my website here.

The documenting of deserts is a theme I often revisit in my work. Several prints are available for purchase. The Death Valley series (1999) are artist’s proofs made on a paper now discontinued; Kentmere’s Kentona (glossy) silver gelatin Baryt paper. The Limited Edition set is in the pipeline and this will be on the Czech Republic paper Foma thought the colours will differ to these you see now as the paper responds quite differently in dilute lith developer. The more recent Moroccan photographs (2010) were made specifically for the London exhibition Photo Lita, July 2010. To see an earlier blog post describing this show please click here. For this I used my last box of an Indian, Baryt paper called Sterling Premium F (grade 3), which disappeared in the late 80′s and an early box of Forte’s Museum fibre paper (grade 4) again no longer available in its cadmium rich emulsion. Due the the rarity of the papers very few prints were made and carry a premium price. The price rises as the edition numbers rise.
